ABSTRACT<\/p>\n

The\u00a0<\/a>severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2\u00a0(<\/a>SARS-CoV-2) outbreak, which started in late 2019, drove the scientific\u00a0<\/a>community\u00a0to conduct innovative\u00a0<\/a>research\u00a0to contain the spread of the\u00a0<\/a>pandemic\u00a0and to care for those already affected. Since then, the search for\u00a0<\/a>new drugs\u00a0that are effective against the\u00a0<\/a>virus\u00a0has been strengthened. Featuring a relatively\u00a0<\/a>low cost\u00a0of\u00a0<\/a>production\u00a0under well-defined\u00a0<\/a>methods\u00a0of cultivation,\u00a0<\/a>fungi\u00a0have been providing a diversity of\u00a0<\/a>antiviral\u00a0metabolites with unprecedented chemical structures. In this\u00a0<\/a>review, we present\u00a0<\/a>viral RNA\u00a0<\/a>infections\u00a0highlighting\u00a0<\/a>SARS-CoV-2\u00a0<\/a>morphogenesis\u00a0and the infectious cycle, the targets of known\u00a0<\/a>antiviral drugs, and current developments in this area such as\u00a0<\/a>drug repurposing. We also explored the metabolic adaptability of\u00a0<\/a>fungi\u00a0during\u00a0<\/a>fermentation\u00a0to produce metabolites active against\u00a0<\/a>RNA viruses, along with their chemical structures, and mechanisms of action. Finally, the\u00a0<\/a>state\u00a0of the\u00a0<\/a>art\u00a0of\u00a0<\/a>research\u00a0on\u00a0<\/a>SARS-CoV-2\u00a0inhibitors of fungal origin is reported, highlighting the metabolites selected by docking studies.<\/p>\n
